Viserys later chooses to marry Alicent Hightower, with whom he has a son Aegon, creating a crisis of succession that sets off the first Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons. As war looms closer in House of the Dragon, the noble houses of Westeros are already beginning to choose sides in the rivalry for the Iron Throne between Rhaenyra and Aegon Targaryen. The shifting political alliances and ever-expanding cast of characters can be hard to keep up with, particularly since so many weren’t featured in Game of Thrones. To help you keep track of the various houses — and how they fit into the inevitable Targaryen civil war — we’ll be updating this house and character guide throughout the season. This is Viserys I (Daenerys’ brother in Game Of Thrones was Viserys III). Viserys was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, his grandfather Jaehaerys Targaryen, but it wasn’t a straightforward succession, and that decision was not without controversy.

Alicent Hightower

But Viserys (Rhaenys' cousin) was chosen instead of her because a woman had never sat on the Iron Throne before. Cole was the son of the steward to the Lord Dondarrion in Blackhaven. He's relatively unknown to the lords and ladies of King's Landing, but strives to make his mark by competing in tournaments. Otto gathers the great houses of Westeros to affirm their allegiance. See the full list of House of the Dragon cast and characters here.

Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans)

Nicknamed the Sea Snake, Corlys is the lord of House Velaryon and is known for his knack for nautical adventures. Like the Targaryens, members of House Velaryon are of Valyrian descent, giving them silver-hued hair. Rhaenys is better known as "The Queen Who Never Was." She could have been heir to the throne, but life's drawn her, uh, no stick at all.

Otto Hightower

We drew up a roster to help you keep track, based on George R.R. Martin's books. We'll be updating this character guide as the episodes wind on. "House of the Dragon" tracks the lead-up and aftermath of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, making the Targaryens — Daenerys' distant relatives — the undeniable focal point of the show. He has a less-than-platonic relationship with Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Though he is the brother of King Viserys, Daemon resents the throne because Viserys refused to allow him to gift a dragon egg to his lover, Mysaria. Daemon is one of the greatest warriors in Westeros at this time and rides the dragon Caraxes. Daemon is also the uncle of Rhaenyra and will later become her husband, just one of his many marriages — though Mysaria stays by his side the whole time. He’ll likely be something of a Jamie Lannister-type in this series, though with a whole lot more ambition. The prequel series’ latest trailer, released on Thursday, already throws a few names at viewers and gives them a whole lot of pale, blond people to keep track of.

After some convincing from her father, Alicent decides to fight for Aegon to be named Viserys’ heir. She all but declares war when she appears at Rhaenyra and Laenor’s wedding feast wearing a green dress. When we meet Aemma at the start of "House of the Dragon," she is very pregnant with a child who Viserys hopes will be his male heir.

Sapochnik departed as showrunner after the first season, leaving Condal to serve as the sole showrunner for the second season. The second season is set to premiere on June 16, 2024, consisting of 8 episodes. Tom's Guide will keep you posted on all updates surrounding the upcoming "House of the Dragon" season 2 episodes, including cast insights, episode info and new promos.

Series co-creator Ryan Condal, a co-showrunner on season 1 with Miguel Sapochnik, is now the sole showrunner on season 2. Co-creator George R.R. Martin also executive produces House of the Dragon with Condal, Sara Hess, Alan Taylor, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere, and Vince Gerardis. Fox joins as Ser Gwayne Hightower, son of Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), brother to Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke), and uncle to King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), Queen Helaena (Phia Saban), and Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell).

Ser Harrold Westerling (Graham McTavish)

Criston’s father is the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven, but despite technically being called a noble house, House Cole is largely looked down upon in noble society for their “low-born” status. Cole’s Dornish ancestry probably doesn’t help matters either. The first season received highly positive reviews, with praise towards its character development, visual effects, writing, score by Ramin Djawadi, and performances. However, the pacing, specifically of the time jumps, and the dark lighting of some scenes were criticized. The series premiere was watched by over 10 million viewers across the linear channels and HBO Max on the first day, the biggest in HBO's history.

Rhea Royce, the Lady of the Vale, was the first wife of Daemon Targaryen, although the two loathed each other. Following Rhaenyra’s engagement to Laenor, Daemon murdered Rhea in order to clear the way for his plots to marry Rhaenyra and claim Runestone for his own. However, Rhea’s cousin Ser Gerald Royce knows Daemon killed Rhea, and will likely challenge Daemon’s inheritance. While serving in the Kingsguard, Criston becomes very close with Rhaenyra, and the pair consummate their relationship prior to her engagement to Laenor. House Strong’s seat is Harrenhal, which hosted Jaehaerys I Targaryen’s assembly to choose an heir.

Ser Harwin Strong is his older brother, but familial love appears to be a foreign concept to Larys. Jason is the Lord of Casterly Rock and appreciates the luxuries of his station. Tries to seek Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s hand in marriage. Eldest son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Laenor Velaryon. Suspects his biological father is Ser Harwin Strong, the Commander of the City Watch.

The first installment in the prequel book series was published in November 2018. See the updated list of House of the Dragon cast and characters below. Their relationship is strained by both women's ambitions for control of the Iron Throne. But Rhaenyra, the king's eldest child, is still in the line of succession.

House Targaryen are pureblood Valyrians, and Viserys brokers a political alliance with one of the only other Valyrian houses, Velaryon, when he commands Rhaenrya to marry her second cousin Laenor Velaryon. Despite this — and the fact they’re related — Daemon still pursues a marriage with his niece Rhaenyra. Jace is the oldest boy born to Rhaenyra, and Luke is her middle child. In episode six, we see Rhaenyra give birth to a baby boy named Joffrey. Princess Rhaenys (not to be confused with the young Princess Rhaenyra) was one of the possible successors offered to the Great Council that King Jaehaerys called before his death.

He occupies the same role that Ned Stark did in "Game of Thrones." Otto is suspicious of Prince Daemon's pursuit of the throne. His goal is to create a pathway for his daughter, Alicent, to rise to power. The only child of King Viserys and Queen Aemma, Princess Rhaenyra grows up believing she will be the queen of Westeros. Daemon Targaryen is the undeniable fox in the Targaryen henhouse. The younger brother of King Viserys Targaryen, Daemon considers himself Viserys' heir. Daemon wields the Valyrian steel sword Dark Sister and is thought to be the type of Targaryen with a dangerous streak.

Once a close friend of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Alicent is Ser Otto Hightower’s daughter and grew up in the Red Keep. Described as one of the most attractive women in all of Westeros, she is King Viserys Targaryen’s second wife. Her relationship with Rhaenyra has more than cooled over the years. Raised by her grandmother Rhaenys Targaryen in Driftmark after her mother’s death. His brother Aegon and nephews Jacaerys and Lucerys Velaryon teased him about not having a dragon when they were younger. A noble house of the Westerlands that holds fealty to House Lannister.
