While driving in the orchard, Kenny and Lynn get the car stuck after running over an old pipe drain. David confronts Lynn in the garage, where they find the woman seated in their grandparents' large truck, handcuffed to the steering wheel. David is shocked to find the woman is still alive, and she explains she is being kept prisoner, and that she came to warn the children about the dangers of living in their grandparents' house. They manage to undo the woman's handcuffs, after which she begins to attack David. Fleeing after the explosion, David runs back to his grandparents' home, where he witnesses them burning clothing and dragging a woman's body into the cellar. Upon sneaking into the cellar, David finds the woman's corpse stuffed in a refrigerator—the same woman he saw at the swim competition.

Adolescent David and his teenage sister Lynn are orphaned after their father dies unexpectedly, and are sent to live with their maternal grandparents at their Victorian home in rural California. The children previously lived in the home with their mother when they were very young, but have little memory of it. En route by bus, the children witness an ominous woman standing in the middle of the road near their grandparents' home, almost causing the driver to get into an accident.
I still don’t understand some of the pivotal scenes from within the movie but more importantly, I don’t care. These are the cheesy Saturday morning/after school special gangsters that only wear all black, wear bandannas and have big thick silver chains hanging over their clothes at all times. I can’t understand why they seemed to wear the same wardrobe despite time passing in the movie and I can’t understand their circumstantial motives. They are a plot device that is reflective of the caricature of the black american thug.
He witnesses his grandfather carrying his incapacitated mother through the orchard. He follows them into the basement, where he watches his grandfather murdering his mother, and referring to David as his son—David realizes he is a product of incest between his mother and grandfather. David confronts his grandfather (and father), and, in a fit of rage, beats him to death with an axe. The children's grandparents stumble upon the melee, and send them to run and retrieve help. They stumble upon a police deputy, who escorts them back to the house. He informs them the woman is in fact their mother—whom they were led to believe was dead—who has recently escaped from a psychiatric hospital in Jamestown, and is dangerous.

During their first night, David has a nightmare about his grandfather killing a woman. Grandma’s house plays out like the old film ‘Soul Food’ mixed in with some Tyler Perry’s Madea without the charisma or comedy of Madea. Grandma’s House has a story that is predictable and derivative of a bunch of other films leaving little to the imagination. You know how this movie will progress from the beginning and there’s no twists or surprises along the way to spice things up. The predictability is slightly believable and the reason that the ideas are derivative is because they are based on common truths.
As someone raised in their Grandma’s house I totally get the concept of young parents unloading their kids on their parents while they deal with something. Loretta could write the book on playing a portly southern woman with good Christian values. Seeing her take her talents and apply them to a grandma figure is unexpectedly appropriate for her talents. There are a few moments where she steals a scene and had me bursting in laughter.
In the pool, Lynn meets Kenny, who takes romantic interest in her. When they return home, they find the police gathered near the property, removing the corpse of the man from a pond. That afternoon, a family barbecue is held at the house with the Sacketts and their children, Raymond and Darlene. While exploring the surrounding orange orchards with Raymond, David is told that a woman was allegedly murdered inside the tunnel of an irrigation ditch, and that her body was stuffed behind the stone wall. Convinced there are other bodies in the connected pond, Raymond fashions a makeshift bomb and detonates it, hoping to dredge them.
There’s a big family in a big house, some scenes that take place in a church, a singing choir, and more. And a lot of positive messages delivered to the audience about self awareness, self worth, and family. This falls into the Good category because it’s genuinely refreshing to enjoy a film that doesn’t take place in a completely urban setting. As the Sacketts leave, David sneaks into the attic, where his grandfather follows him. David escapes onto the roof of the house, accidentally severing the house's phone line in the process. Moments later, Kenny arrives to take Lynn on a date, leaving David alone at home with his grandparents.
The acting from everyone not named Grandma is painfully inconsistent. A lot of the cast leans on Loretta to lead the scene when she shares a scene and moments without her suffer for her lack of participation. There are a lot of moments that seem OVER acted and some where the actors seem incapable of emoting. I give a slight pass to the over acting when someone is inebriated as that could be an intentional part of the performance but those moments pull me out of the immersion of the film.
